While the Baltimore Orioles had a superstar shinning at third base, in Manny Machado, and the league leader in home runs at first, in Chris Davis, they quietly had one of the most productive second basemen in the game, in Jonathan Schoop.  Schoop has flown under the radar when it comes to American League second basemen, however after his breakout season in 2016, he will start to become a household name.

Schoop made his debut in 2013 at the age of 21.  Originally from Willemstad, Curacao, Schoop signed as a amateur free agent in 2008.  He played just five games in ’13, but returned the following season as the starting second basemen for the Orioles.  At just 22, Schoop was showing great potential, hitting 16 home runs and proving his capability in the field.

Last season, he ran into injury trouble.  Early in April he partially tore a ligament in his right knee, sidelining him for half the season.  He played just 86 games, hitting .279 with 16 home runs.

This season, Schoop had his break-out party.  Playing in all 162 games, Schoop launched 25 homers and drove in 83 runs for the Orioles.  He also finished tied with Adam Jones for the second most hits on team, with 164.  Schoop showed not only that he can hit for power, but consistently get base hits.  Together, with his uncanny ability to make plays in the field, has him considered to be one of the best up-and-coming players in the major leagues.

Continue the story for his 2016 grade and an look into his future with the Orioles…
